Dorel (parent company to Cosco, Safety 1st, Eddie Bauer & Maxi-Cosi) has increased the useful life, a.k.a. expiration, on many of their products. It is not retroactive, but it does apply to both Canadian and American seats. In line with many other manufacturers increasing the useful life of their products it deflates the theory that expiration dates are there as a ‘cash grab’ designed to make consumers spend more money. If that were true expiration dates would be shrinking!

I have a safety 1st alpha omega elite model 22456-GRS-03-30-2010
Mfg WCE1B269425
I need to know if this car seat is safe to use
Thank you
Hi Joyce. Your manufacture date is March 30, 2010, which means your carseat expires after 8 years. It won’t magically break on March 31, 2018, but plastic does have a limited amount of time before it starts to become brittle and over time like that, parents tend to not care for the harness as it should be. It would be a good time to start looking for its replacement.
Ummmm my Apt40RF has a 10 year expiration. Yes, I’m sure.
I would have hated that! I LOVED the 6 year rule. It meant I had a good excuse to get new seats over the years for the kids. We just had another Dorel seat hit 6 years. Away it went.
