Have you ever been confused by the wording “Use only in a rear-facing position when using restraint with an infant weighing less than 22 pounds”? This text is found in a convertible carseat manual and on a label on the side of the carseat and is, without a doubt, one of the most confusing statements a parent will read when trying to figure out if that convertible is appropriate for their rear-facing child. What does it mean?
It doesn’t mean that the convertible only rear-faces to 22 lbs. What it does mean is that all children weighing less than 22 lbs. have to ride rear-facing in that restraint. So now you know!
This has been a source of much confusion for the parents I have worked with, and I’ve received panicked calls from people who think they have to buy a new seat to continue RF. If it said “Child restraint MUST be used in the RF position for children under 22 lbs” it would be so much clearer!
I agree, Jessica. But you know bureaucrats–they love overly complicating things :/.
I have always hated this wording. It would make so much more sense to have it the other way around: If using restraint with an infant weighing less than 22 pounds, use only in a rear-facing position.
If only they would fix it before they mandate the other labeling changes for 2014 lol!
And it’s federally mandated wording so it’s not like they can just fix it. >_<
