Don’t drink and drive or sleep and drive!
Rear face for as long as the car seat will let you!!!!
As a grandmother to four (ages eight, five, four and four months) and one due any day now, I know the importance and all the do’s and don’t’s that go along with a proper car seat care and installation. Did I mention that my daughter is a Car Seat Tech? Actually, she can be a bit of a nag and sometimes we just roll our eyes when she starts on her car-seat chatter. But, I’ve learned a lot from her – I never knew that car seats expired; I know that kids can stay rear facing longer than I ever imagined; I know my eight year old still loves sitting in his car seat; and I’ve learned that it is okay to say “nipples” when talking about harness placements! I’ve also learned that it is much easier for a grandmother to have a car seat of her own (for the grandchildren)- thus eliminating seat changing everytime they come for a visit!
Don’t drive with headphones on, listening to your iPod!
Get enough sleep, every day. I can’t say that I do, but I’m working on it. Many accidents are caused by too-tired drivers who drift off or day dream. Sleep is crucial!
Keep your eyes on the road! As tempting as it may be to look at your child when they talk to you or ask you to “watch me mommy”, just talk to them or tell them looking right now would be dangerous.
Also, dont turn around to grab stuff at a red light, my aunt let up the brake accidentally while reaching for a toy, she rearended the car in front of her 🙁
Um…. Don’t Shave your bikini area while behind the wheel, having your ex-husband steer from the passenger seat, while going to visit your boyfriend!!!!
This actually happend in Florida!!!
Car seats aren’t just for kiddies, they make doggie ones too for the little ones. It’s much safer for my two Boston Terriers, and gives me peace of mind.
No eating, no texting, no distractions!
I don’t have any tips because I’m pregnant with my first child and have never used a carseat before!! But I look forward to all the adventures. 🙂 Ok one tip — when you drive in reverse, look behind you!
ERF is the safest and has the added bonus of your child being unable to see you when you flip the “bird” to others. Kidding. People should always hold their hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel. It provides the most secure way of holding the steering wheel so that the driver is in control and in case of an accident, it helps prevent the air bag from breaking your wrists.
RF is safest! And, it means you can drive through Sonic and get yourself a beverage and nobody has to know about it and scream for you to share. 🙂 Quiet kids = less distracted mother.
Try to ignore your kids when they start yelling ‘mooooooom! he’s wiping boogers on meeeeee!!”
Don’t read the newspaper when driving!
Remember to buckle the child in the infant seat, not jus the seat in the car…it works better that way. (not speaking from experience or anything *blushing*)
If you want to knit while in the car, always ask someone else to drive (hopefully a licensed driver!).
Don’t eat soup or an ice-cream cone while driving. It requires too much coordination (yes, I have seen both)
Don’t cut across the lanes in a parking lot.
don’t buckle the dog near the child if the child is going to have a snack. child may never get said snack, but dog will surely be a happy pup!
Always wear your seatbelt, it keeps the aliens from sucking you out of your car.
Don’t feed your child, who is in the backseat, while you are driving. Mom’s please pull over.
Don’t fiddle with the radio, CD or MP3 player while driving. Choose your music before leaving the driveway 😉
watch out for those texters out there.. they drive worse than drunk people do..
Always check your blind spot when changing lanes….. I could use this is October when my baby is due!!!
Have your dog in a crate or buckled in with a car harness! I can’t believe how many people I see with their dogs climbing all over them while they are driving! Common sense people!
