Girl Rising, “I feel as though I have power…I can do anything.”

Thank you to MrsCPSDarren for a public service guest blog!

For all of us who love our baby daughters, who nurture them with all our hearts, keep them safe with all our being, move mountains to see them successful and happy, and know in our deepest of souls that they will quite simply one day rock this planet ….  I invite you to be part of a global movement to repair the world, by EDUCATING GIRLS.  Read on to learn how you can join in. Moms of the world – we need you.

Hi everyone. I’m inviting you to personally take part in the distribution of an exciting new film that just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.  Girl Rising spotlights the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change a girl – and the world. Many millions of girls face barriers to education that boys do not. We can help break those barriers by bringing global attention to the enormous benefits of educating girls. Your community is a great place to start. Girl Rising will be released in theaters on March 7th, 2013, on the eve of International Women’s Day, and we invite you to host a local screening, with global impact.

The distribution model is actually crowd-sourced. You can go online to “captain” a screening, and the company will work with you to get it to your favorite theater. To view the trailer, and learn how to bring Girl Rising to your community, please visit:  http://www.girlrising.com .

Around the world, millions of girls face barriers to education that boys do not. And, yet, when you educate a girl, you can break cycles of poverty in just one generation. Removing barriers to girls’ education – such as early and forced marriage, domestic slavery, sex trafficking, gender violence and discrimination, lack of access to healthcare, school fees – means not only a better life for girls, but a safer, healthier, and more prosperous world for all. Consider these numbers:

  • GDP Rises: When 10% more of its girls go to school, a country’s GDP increases an average of 3%. (Council on Foreign Relations)
  • Health is Improved: Educated mothers are 50% more likely to immunize their children. And when more girls are educated, a country’s malnutrition and HIV rates decline. (UNGEI, the Council on Foreign Relations)
  • Honest Governance Grows: When women take leadership roles in their community, corruption diminishes. (Center for Global Development)
  • Structures Change: When women are educated and empowered, democracy is more likely to flourish and the conditions that promote extremism are reduced. (World Politics)

Educating Girls Works.  Lives Change. Be a part of changing the world by taking action for girls. By sharing their personal journeys, the girls of Girl Rising become our teachers. Research shows that investing in girls can transform families, communities and nations.  The girls of Girl Rising show us how.

Living an Authentic Life – with a Hybrid

There is a saying that “how you do anything is how you do everything.” Actually, it’s a nice book you can buy here.  I mentioned that here in this blog last September. Back then, I was in a writing frenzy, and actually penned a second piece – but alas, it wasn’t published by the overlording editors who run this site.   Perhaps I was too critical of a certain webmaster that I happen to be married to…

But redemption has come, and I’ve been invited back.

The premise of the book is that the essence of your unique individual soul can’t help but show up in absolutely everything you do. It will always bleed through.  So, just in the first 113 words of this essay, you might guess that I mildly enjoy challenging the status quo, sharing my insights to inspire others, and often relish in borderline exhibitionist “look at me, I’m the good one” – or as some prefer to  call it, self-righteousness. And honestly, you wouldn’t be wrong. I do my best to contain it, but there is so much vitality and juiciness there, it is lifegiving and fun to play with it on occasion.  Living an authentic life and loving (or simply un-exiling) your authentic self has a habit of doing that.

How many of you pretend to be other? How much fun are you having being that?  How many shades of grey would you trade for a single burst of color? Serious questions to ponder. When you are done with this blog, take a 6 minute soul break and watch this video –  http://soulbiographies.com/an-uncontained-life/ . I subscribe to this series and get an inspiring short film in my inbox every Monday morning. It helps start the week in a nice way.

And now for the segue – what in the world does that have to do with cars, namely hybrids?

Integral Coaching and the Honda Odyssey (Long Term Wrap Part II)

CPSDarren asked if I would write a paragraph or two as a review of our summer with the beloved Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 2011. I thought about it for the entire summer, and then today, our last day with the minivan, decided it was time to crunch this out.

First, a little bit about the title. There is a saying that “how you do anything is how you do everything.” Actually, it’s a nice book you can buy here. If you know anything about me, you’ll know that I’m a storyteller – that is, once I’ve warmed up to you and gotten over my shyness and fear that I’ll be annihilated if I speak, I can actually get going and work up a good froth until someone kicks me in the shins and tells me to slow down and give someone else chance. You see, I have a lot to say about brilliant insights I’ve made and philosophies I’ve created about this world. I just so rarely think that it’s my turn to say it. Sometimes, it’s just preferable to stay in my head where it all makes sense and nobody can sass me back. You’ll also discover that I’m incredibly self-referential – in the end, it’s all about me. I want people to come inside my mind and see and feel and understand exactly as I have. I’ve led a lifetime trying to pretend otherwise, but somewhere in my 40s (actually just last week), I discovered how shallow I really was.

I work for a large global technology company as a program manager, and am also an integral coach. The cool thing about integral coaching is that absolutely everything about your life reveals you in some way. Everything you say, everything you do is an expression somehow of you. The integral coach’s job is to help you become aware of those patterns, explore them, and then develop practices and new skillsets and qualities to step into a more fulfilling and authentic life. Cool, huh?

Welcome 2010 – Enjoy the Ride

Happy New Year to all the CPS faithful. I’m CPSDarren’s wife, here to write a guest blog. Something light, something inspiring, something uniquely me. He doesn’t ask for much.

It’s Friday night here, as winter break draws to a close. This is always a peaceful and reflective time for me, when I most sense my connection to my family, my faith, and my spirit.

It’s been a bit of a crazy day, perhaps an icon for the entire year – we filled it with homemade cinnamon rolls in the morning, Disney Channel at lunch, a Chipmunks movie in the afternoon, one enormous tantrum, a few naps, endless laundry, homemade chicken noodle soup for dinner, a daughter baking cookies, a son playing video games, another stomping his feet and screaming, and now this.

In the midst of the swirl, I sit here in the darkened room, staring out the window – miraculously feeling only peace and gratitude for having seen the beauty in this day.  Sure my pulse is racing a bit, but I know this will pass. Somewhere inside, there is a stillness that cannot be touched.

It’s dark outside. The neighborhood lights are twinkling off the fallen snow and icicles.  The trees are bare, save the evergreens, reminding us that amongst all this frigid darkness, life remains. Maybe that’s why the universe grants us the gift to see our breath in the gloomy cold of winter – a great reminder that somewhere deep within, our warm blood flows and we are, in fact, alive.

You’ve been offered a great gift – to have seen another day, let alone a new year and a new decade. Find a peaceful moment and stand in the stillness. Rediscover your connection and feel your life, coursing through your body.  Life is. We aren’t asked to perfect it, nor control it, nor defend against it, nor fear it, nor conquer it. We are simply asked to live it, and to awaken to the hidden gifts that reveal themselves in the individual moments.  They are there all around you. So, relax and flow in the river of your life.

Enjoy the ride. May you awaken to your beauty and peace in the new year.
