I don't know whether I missed it as part of the post (kidlings interrupted the reading several times) but I didn't see mentioned any PA concerns about using infant carseats as baby carriers. Snap-out-of-car and snap-into-stroller seats really concern me for this reason, as many parents are not educated about the dangers of positional asphyxia at all, and especially not as they relate to the extended us of carseats.

Carseats are wonderful, important, safety items and are best left in the car, and the infant would do well to be transferred to a quality baby carrier, stroller, or carried in-arms outsode of the car.

@ketchupqueen, with the orbit base, you can *only* rotate the seats into the rear-facing position. It's specifically designed so you can't rotate your baby frontward, even if you wanted to.

Orbit will be offering the infant seat (with base) separate from the stroller when the G2 series launches. I can't imagine many situations when this would be an advantage, though, as it would have a very hard time attaching to a universal frame/adapter.

KQ, yes, you can find any old Snug for much less than what I found online, but I was matching features. So that's the feature pricepoint that's equivalent to the features found on the Orbit. And yes, the vehicle manufacturer must also OK LATCH install in the center. It's a pretty liberal center LATCH installation rule, similar to Britax's.

Jennifer, I didn't include the price of the stroller seat because the stroller comes with the infant seat. But yes, you'd probably want to buy the stroller seat if you want the baby out of the carseat for extended periods of time.

I just want to add, that you are forgetting in your cost comparison the cost of the actual stroller seat for the orbit. That would add 225 or so to the cost of the system, to have the same type of system as the bugaboo or the vista. ANd the vista also comes with the bassinet and stoller seat.

I have 2 nitpicks: you can get a SnugRide for a lot less than $109, even at regular price. ;) Also, I assume Orbit allows use in the middle if the above-mentioned conditions are met AND the vehicle manufacturer allows it? I hope?

Also, as cool as the rotate-into-place base is, I wince when I think of the parents that like to install rear-facing infant seats forward-facing, and how easy they'd have it with this seat. Not, I think, that it's likely if you're spending that much money on an INFANT (!) seat/stroller, but it could happen...

This is a pretty neat infant seat, but boy I don't know how I'd do with a fabric-covered seat. ;) Our infant seat gets carried around a lot, used in (IN) shopping carts, etc. and I fear that it would have tears and marks pretty quickly!

Consumer Reports has a lot of unresolved issues with their child restraint testing. For example, the Orbit Toddler Car Seat received a good "Crash Protection" rating from Consumer Reports. As it uses the same base and attachment method when rear-facing, I wonder how they can rationalize this given the infant seat detachment claim. They have also yet to respond to any of the issues regarding their test methods, or why their tests did not produce the same results as those done later by the NHTSA or Orbit (using the same lab).

CR may or may not have found a safety issue, but their secretive methods and prior reputation don't lend a lot of credence to such claims. If you're going to cry wolf on such matters, you really better have a position of expertise and authority, and they still need to earn that in the area of child passenger safety.
